Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Joel Edgerton Set to Battle The Thing

Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Joel Edgerton Set to Battle The Thing (click for larger image)The prequel to John Carpenter’s classic The Thing has landed its first two stars who will surely duke it out with not only the shape shifting alien but also them crazy Swedes.

According to The Hollywood Reporter’s Heat Vision Blog Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Joel Edgerton will star in The Thing with Matthijs Van Heijningen directing from a script written by Ronald D. Moore and Eric Heisserer.

Winstead will play a Ph.D. candidate who joins a Norwegian research team in Antarctica after it discovers an alien ship in the ice. When a trapped organism is freed and begins a series of attacks, she is forced to team with a blue-collar mercenary helicopter pilot (Edgerton) to stop the rampage.

The Thing begins filming in Toronto on March 15th. Let’s just sit back and patiently await the inevitable announcement that this flick will be in 3D, shall we?

Being that The Thing is in my top three movies of all time, I should be at least a little upset at this. Honestly, I couldn’t care less. Let them make their “beautiful young scientist and heart-throb hero VS. the thing” movie. It’s going to suck, certain people will bitch, but at the end of the day The Thing will remain one of the best movies ever made.

The game was pretty awesome despite some control issues.

I’m with you really. I don’t care which is odd. There’s no stopping them. I would have been pretty pissed off if the Alien prequel was going to be directed by anyone other than Ridley Scott though. That I do care about.

Normally I love anything Mary Elizabeth Winstead is in, but this is setting off bad vibes. I’ll wait to see what they do before writing it off completely.

Ron Moore’s name attached gives me some hope. And at least it’s not another remake. I’ll wait and see…

Well, we all know they’ll die in the end.

  • Mr. Dark

Ronald D Moore…of Battlestar Galactica? That’s the one glimmer of light in this.

Oh, and it won’t be in 3D, it’ll be 4D! Not only will you view it in three dimensions, you’ll actually FEEL the SUCK coming from the screen!

I think I will stick with The Thing video game for any additional Thing chaos that I crave. This just keeps sounding like more of a cash in everytime I read about it.

      I like the game.

      I don’t think there’s a need for another helicopter pilot unless it’s R.J. MacReady.

I wish they’d make a movie based off the game, pretty cool idea for a sequel. There was some issues imo with it but it definitely gave me a few scares.

Actually the director is Jr. isn’t he? Who hasn’t done diddly squat. How does he get to direct the prequel to one of the greatest horror films ever made? Unless I’m wrong this guy looks like he’s still in High School.

I have a baaaaaaaaad feeling about this… The Thing should contain ZERO females! Haven’t they done their research? 😀

Supposedly one of the Norwegians seen in the photo in the first film was a lady. Still I think this whole thing is kind of pointless. Wish they would leave it alone.
