Upcoming Game Inner Chains Takes You to Outer Space Hell

So, Hell is located on another planet now? That’s a new one on me. Well, it’s not Hell exactly, but it might as well be.

I’m talking, of course, about the upcoming indie game Inner Chains, which we last reported on back in September. It’s set on a distant planet that closely resembles most depictions of Hell, after man abandoned it and nature was left to its own devices. But after a few million years, man’s greed leads them to try to reclaim the nightmarish world, but by this point, it’s a place where no human should ever set foot.

It’s already been in development for quite some time, but developer Telepaths’ Tree has just launched a Kickstarter to help get it finished. They’re only asking for $10,000, hardly a tall order, and I expect it to soar past that amount in no time.

And man, for an indie title, this game soars in the graphics department. Based on the footage and screenshots, you’d be forgiven for mistaking it for an AAA game. The amount of care put into Inner Chains by the developers is clearly evident everywhere you look.

Synopsis:
An FPS horror game set in a surreal, dark, and deadly biomechanical world which resembles nothing you have ever encountered. In the world of Inner Chains, you don’t get to set the rules. You are just a small part of a hostile, unwelcoming universe. If you want to survive, the only thing you can do is to try to discover its secrets.

A planet. Distant future. A rock floating in space, no longer resembling what it had once been. Without human interference, nature has begun to adapt to the new conditions, reclaiming what was once taken by humans. In its everlasting pursuit of perfection, it has begun to assimilate with the abandoned technology, giving life to biomechanical beings.

Left to its own devices, man-made technology has also changed as it tried to adapt to the new environment. Evolution cannot be stopped, so a strong symbiosis soon developed between technology and nature, making it difficult to determine what is alive and what is mechanical in the world of Inner Chains.

After several million years of biomechanical evolution, mankind has once again become an important part of the ecosystem. However, its stage of development could be compared to the Middle Ages of our civilization. As a result, the human race, oblivious to its own history, cannot fully comprehend or control the powerful technology at its disposal. The people living in the world of Inner Chains accept this situation as natural and focus on using the planet’s resources of to their advantage. There is also something that has not changed through the millennia: social mechanisms governing human life, such as faith, dominance, oppression or manipulation. They have led to the emergence of multiple castes, and later to the supremacy of one particular group which had discovered these mechanisms first, learned them well and used them to rise to power. The other castes had to submit, looking to the leaders with hope for a brighter future.

As one of the inhabitants of this world, your head filled with the teachings of the Ruling Caste, you have only one goal: to get to a mythical place called the Last Hope and leave this sick, degenerated, dying planet once and for all. You embark on your journey full of fanatical zeal, but soon it becomes clear that nothing is what it seems in this strange world. To discover your role in it, you’ll have to fight for survival, face hostile fauna and flora, overcome your own weaknesses, stay observant to your surroundings and explore the secrets of the game’s world. Your survival depends entirely on your watchfulness, logical judgment, quick reflexes, accuracy and the ability to use your surroundings to your advantage.
