The Steve Alten-penned novel Meg, originally released in 1997, has been on Hollywood’s radar for many years, but every time the project starts to swim, its fins are snipped right off. We fear the same may soon be happening again, as Eli Roth is no longer attached to direct. Read on for the latest.

Per THR, Roth has officially departed the project, potentially due to concerns over budget. Warner Bros. and Chinese company Gravity are trying to keep the creature feature afloat, and Jon Turteltaub (National Treasure) is in early talks to replace Roth in the director’s chair.

The site also reports that producers and executives are looking for a way to scale back on the film, including doing a rewrite. The script Roth was set to bring to the screen was written by Dean Georgaris, and the estimated budget was upwards of $100 million.

In the book, the story revolves around two men who band together to neutralize an ancient shark that’s threatening the California coast. The Megaladon, considered one of the largest and most powerful predators in history, can reach a maximum length of 70 feet.
