Butler Plans His Escape

For old time's sake ... the original Snake!I really don’t know how to feel about this one. Escape From New York is one of my favorite movies of all time for a variety of reasons, not the least of which has to do with Kurt Russell being the consummate badass, but now it’s getting the remake treatment according to Variety.

It’s sort of all right, though, as Gerard (300) Butler is up for the lead, working from a script by Black Hawk Down penner Ken Nolan. A few studios are vying for the pic mainly due to Butler’s involvement, believing this remake could rake in as much cash as 300 did this weekend, despite the fact that Butler will have to wear a shirt most of the time.

The original, directed by John Carpenter, tells of Snake Plissken, a convict who is given the chance of a wiped-clean record if he’s willing to head into the maximum security prison formerly known as Manhattan to rescue the President. How much of that will change for the redux is unknown as of now, but if nothing else we know the effects will be more up-to-date. Though to be honest that’s part of the charm of the original…
