Freaks of the Heartland on Hold

Freaks of the Hearland on HoldIt’s been a really long time since last we talked about the latest Steve Niles property to get the big screen adaptation, Freaks of the Hearland. You know that old saying, sometimes no news is good news? Well, that doesn’t always apply. Case in point …

According to The Hollywood Reporter the film’s production outfit, Overture Films, is going through some changes. Overture sent out signals over the past week that it is temporarily putting several projects that had been in development on hold.

In the wake of a spotty track record at the box office in 2009, Liberty/Starz is taking a close look at the company’s operations. But while company insiders are describing it as forward-looking financial planning, agencies have been informed of a 90-day hold on development.

One casualty of said “holding pattern” is Freaks of the Hearland, which was about to begin the casting process. No word yet about if or when this project will get back on its feet, but when we know, you’ll know.
