Back in December of last year, Relativity Media announced its slate of 2016 releases, and we were delighted to spot The Strangers 2 on there. The long-awaited sequel was dated for theatrical release on December 2, 2016, though those plans have likely been changed. Read on for the latest.

Speaking with Collider, producer Roy Lee noted that Relativity’s financial issues have left the sequel’s fate unknown.

We have a script that’s fantastic,” said Lee, “but they’ve had some financial difficulties so it’s unclear as to whether or not they’ll be able to finance the movie.”

Ben Ketai (Chosen) is the latest writer on the film, which follows a family on the verge of sending their troubled teenage daughter to boarding school as they embark on one last family trip to a mobile home park that their uncle runs. Their last bonding opportunity turns to horror when the teenage children discover the bodies of their aunt and uncle, fresh from a recent visit from the Strangers — Man in the Mask, Pin Up Girl, and Dollface. The night becomes a race to escape for the family as the masked killers take new pleasure in tormenting their victims in this twisted sequel that picks up where the original’s bloody footprints leave off.

It’s unclear whether or not the previously announced Marcel Langenegger is still on board to direct. Stay tuned.
