This Sunday is Valentine’s Day, but more importantly, it marks the return of “The Walking Dead.” The first of eight episodes in the sixth season’s second half promises to be a game-changer, and according to the key players behind the scenes, those changes will be huge.

In interviews with THR, the near future was teased.

It will really set the stage for what’s going to come and the many seasons that will hopefully come after this,” Robert Kirkman said of this Sunday’s mid-season premiere, calling it “a very big turning point in the series.”

Greg Nicotero, who directed both the mid-season return and the Season 6 finale, noted that the second half of the season brings the “most exciting, dramatic change in the show.”

We’re now coming upon a group of people who are formidable [Negan and the Saviors] and somebody that Rick is not going to be able to take care of as easily as he did with the people at Grady Memorial, Terminus, or the Governor’s group,” Nicotero said. “This is a whole other animal, and we’re taking the show in a whole other direction. The finale is the 15th episode I’ve directed and every episode is a different set of challenges and I love [the mid-season premiere] but the finale is the best work I’ve done on the show.”

Cannot. Wait.

“The Walking Dead” is executive produced by Scott Gimple, Robert Kirkman, Gale Anne Hurd, David Alpert, Greg Nicotero, and Tom Luse.
