In the most surprising casting news of the day, The Wrap is reporting that Danny McBride is preparing to move from comedy to sci-fi, as he’s in early discussions to co-star in Ridley Scott‘s big-budget blockbuster film Alien: Covenant.

Michael Fassbender is reprising his role from Prometheus, and he’ll be joined by Katherine Waterston as the series’ new female lead. The director’s company Scott Free is producing the tentpole for 20th Century Fox, which, like McBride’s representatives, declined to comment.

Specific plot details for the new film are being closely guarded, but it is believed to follow the crew of the colony ship Covenant, bound for a remote planet, who discover what they believe is an uncharted paradise but is, in fact, a dark, dangerous world, the only inhabitant of which is David (Fassbender), the “synthetic” and survivor of the doomed Prometheus expedition.

The film is set for release on October 6, 2017.
