Thoughts on the New Halloween

DC Readers have been e-mailing me asking why I have been so quiet in regards to Rob Zombie’s new film Halloween since I’ve been dubbed Dread Central’s “Halloween Guy” due to my close involvement with the franchise through putting on the Halloween 25th Anniversary Convention and working on the Halloween: 25 Years of Terror DVD. Apparently people are taking my silence in a negative way. So much so that bogus rumors that I am not a supporter of the film have reached as far as the film’s cast and crew. I’d like to publicly set the record straight.

I was asked directly by the film’s producer not to report on anything I saw on set until I am given permission to do so, and I have every intention of complying with his request. That being said, however, I do want to say that I have absolutely loved everything I have seen thus far. Rob is kicking major ass with this film and has finally made the character of Michael Myers scary again. Casting has been top notch, and Malcolm McDowell is amazing as Dr. Sam Loomis.

Fans were up in arms at first about the casting of Tyler Mane as Myers due to his size, but I have to tell you he looks perfect in the role. He’s tall but doesn’t look hulking like some feared in the trademark jumpsuit. The scenes I’ve been fortunate enough to watch Tyler film have been badass. From what I’ve seen so far, he’s the best Michael since Nick Castle.

Lastly, we can’t talk about Myers without talking about the infamous mask. F/X artist Wayne Toth has really outdone himself (and his predecessors) with his new take on the classic mask. Rob’s idea of the rotted “Frankenmyers” look is just genius, and Toth really brought that vision to life in the new mask. The pictures of the mask online just don’t do it justice. I’m sorry I can’t get into specifics, but once I’m given the okay, you will get it all!
