Barry Sonnenfeld to Direct Gil’s All Fright Diner for DreamWorks

Drive AngryNothing like taking the kitchen sink approach to a project, which is what it sounds like A. Lee Martinez did when writing the novel Gil’s All Fright Diner about a vampire and werewolf who team up to fight zombies after stopping at a diner in the desert that is a conduit for the supernatural.

Now, thanks to the success of The Twilight Saga, of course any project that even hints at a vamp/lycan collaboration is a hot ticket, so DreamWorks Animation has snapped up Kung Fu Panda scribes Ethan Reiff and Cyrus Voris to write an adaptation of Gil’s All Fright Diner.

Barry Sonnenfeld (The Addams Family/Addams Family Values) is attached to direct.

According to Variety there’s an odd couple aspect of the story [about] this vampire and werewolf who team to save the world from an ancient demon and his modern ally, a high school cheerleader who wants to be famous.

We’ll keep our eyes and ears open for more on Gil’s All Fright Diner in the coming weeks.

the book is a nice fun read

  • Mr. Dark

I read this book, it’s absolutely fantastic. Douglas Adams if he wrote horror instead of sci-fi, and was Texan instead of British. Martinez is a Dallas local. I read this and instantly said ‘someone should make a movie out of this, it’ll rock’.

Yeah, it’s about a werewolf and a vampire, but it’s also about someone trying to unleash Lovecraftian horrors from said diner, and the various folks (dead, living, and undead) who band together to stop them.

  • The Butcher

Ive read it. It’s cute. It’s also a little Lansdale-ish (probably the fact they are both wise-acre Texans!)

    Could be a cool film.
