We knew it was going to open big, but The Twilight Saga: New Moon opened stronger than even its biggest fans had predicted. $140.7 Million domestically plus another $118.1 million from 25 territories across the globe, breaking records in the US, Australia, and New Zealand.

Twilight Saga: New Moon Sets Midnight Opening Box Office Record

Per The Hollywood Reporter New Moon‘s $72.7 million Friday represented the biggest single-day tally ever in the States, but the rest of its receipts weren’t quite enough to topple reigning opening weekend champs 2008’s The Dark Knight ($158.4 million) or 2007’s Spider-Man 3 ($151.1 million). Still, its $34,965 and $17,677 per screen averages in the US and internationally, respectively, are nothing to sneeze at.

The film also trumped Sex and the City as ticket seller Fandango‘s “Top Percentage of Tickets Sold for Opening Weekend” winner with 18% versus SATC‘s 16% (in comparison, the original Twilight holds down third place at 15%).

With the long Thanksgiving weekend approaching, it’s likely New Moon will maintain its hold on the No. 1 spot, but is it worth spending your hard-earned holiday cash on? Why not see what Dread Central’s experts had to say? Along with Nomad’s New Moon review that was posted a couple of days ago, Morgan — who has actually READ the books and is a fan of the series overall — has chimed in with her $.02 as well (read her New Moon review here).
