Monster Squad Gets a Director – But It’s Not a Remake

Monster Squad Gets a Director - But It's Not a RemakeUm. We’re a little confused. Just a smidge. You see, there was this little flick roaming around called Nightcrawlers that sounded pretty decent. Lo and behold today the film has not only gotten itself a director but also a new title — Monster Squad! But … it’s not a remake. Okay then.

According to the Hollywood Reporter now that McG is no longer attached, Mike Mitchell will direct Monster Squad for Warner Bros. It is described as a long-gestating supernatural action comedy.

The studio picked up Nightcrawlers as a spec by Brian Lynch in 2000. The project went through numerous writers, including Michael Arndt and Audrey Wells, as Warner sought to find the right balance of laughs and chills.

Brad Copeland wrote the current script, and Warner is aiming for a shoot in late summer 2010. Keep it here for more.

If it’s not a remake, then why title it the exact same title as a cult classic from the 80’s?

If this film doesn’t get retitled soon then this is just another lame attempt by the conceptually inept studio charnel house to “remake without remaking a movie”.

Here’s a novel concept to fix all these problems: JUST WRITE AN ORIGINAL SCRIPT, ASSHOLES!!!

It’s not the first time there was a movie with the same title. Like for instance Gladiator. Now the one I have seen and own is about boxing.

Yes, but there’s a bit of a difference between something with a generic one-word title like Gladiator and something specific like Monster Squad, no?

You’re absolutely right – Fred Dekker should have given his 1987 movie a different title so as not to upset fans of the old 1970s TV series with the same name. :p
