Silent Hill Scribe Roger Avary Sentenced to a Year in Prison

Speaking as someone who’s lost a loved one at the hands of a drunk driver, this is a tough story to sympathize with. Academy Award winning writer/director Roger Avary has been sentenced to a year in prison after a drunk driving incident claimed the life of a friend and left others with serious injuries.

E! reports that Ventura County Superior Court Judge Edward Bordie also gave Avary five years’ probation and ordered him to enroll in a DUI education program. Bordie justified the relatively light punishment by stating that the 44-year-old filmmaker had shown remorse and had no criminal background.

After initially pleading innocent last December, Avary changed his mind and pleaded guilty August 18th to gross vehicular manslaughter and drunken driving.

My guess is that Avary has a lot to atone for, and he’ll be dealing with this incident (which took the life of his friend, Andreas Zini) long after his sentence is up. Hopefully he’ll find a way to put those demons to rest.
