A Crime Show With Bite

The Lifetime Network sucks

But for once, it does so intentionally. Seems the estrogen-centric channel most famed for tearjerkers, sappy romance, and “men are evil” movies is getting into the horror game with a new vampire-themed crime drama premiering next month called “Blood Ties”.

Described as a stylish supernatural thriller infused with a light twist of romance and humor, the series deals with former Toronto cop turned private investigator Vicki Nelson (Christina Cox, an actress whose long list of TV credits includes, appropriately enough, a couple of episodes of “Forever Knight”) who quit the force rather than accept being demoted to a desk job when she began having vision problems. Her last case sets her on a new path investigating supernatural crimes. She soon finds herself teamed up with a handsome vampire named Henry, along with her ex-partner/lover Mike Celluci, to battle the forces of evil both normal and paranormal even as a love triangle erupts between Vicki, the ex, and the vampire.

“Vicki, the Ex & the Vampire” – sounds like a sitcom waiting to happen.

Anyway “Blood Ties”, which has already been likened to a cross between “Forever Knight”, “Bones”, and “The Dresden Files”, is based on a series of popular novels by Tanya Huff. I’ve never heard of them before, but I’m guessing these books must have a strong following seeing as how a “Blood Ties” fansite has already emerged for a show that has yet to even premiere.

Lifetime will premiere “Blood Ties” with back-to-back episodes on Sunday, March 11th beginning at 9/8 Central. Lifetime’s website has a short promo for the show that you can view, and I must admit that it really doesn’t look all that bad…
