The Exorcism of Molly Hartley

Described as “a love letter to ’80s slasher flicks,” Todd Strauss-Schulson’s The Final Girls (review) is an unconventional comedy about Max, a high school senior, who is mysteriously transported with her friends into a 1980s horror film that starred Max’s mother, a celebrated scream queen.

Synopsis:
When Max (Taissa Farmiga) and her friends reluctantly attend an anniversary screening of Camp Bloodbath, the infamous ‘80s horror film that starred Max’s late mother (Malin Akerman), they are mysteriously sucked into the silver screen. They soon realize they are trapped inside the cult classic movie and must team up with the fictional and ill-fated camp counselors, including Max’s mom as the scream queen, to battle the film’s machete-wielding killer. With the body count rising in scene after iconic scene, who will be the final girls left standing and live to escape this film?

The Final Girls

Also available for streaming today, Eli Roth delivers another dose of terror with Knock Knock (review), his second film to be released here in 2015. This one stars Lorenza Izzo, Keanu Reeves, and Ana de Armas and draws inspiration from the 1977 horror-thriller Death Game.

Synopsis:
Evan Webber (Reeves) is living the dream. Just look at his beautiful, successful wife; his two wonderful kids; and his truly stunning house—which he designed himself. Of course he did. Things are going so well, Evan doesn’t even mind spending Father’s Day alone while the rest of his family heads out for a beach weekend. And then there’s a knock on the door.

The two young women (Izzo, de Armas) standing on Evan’s doorstep are where Evan’s dream takes a nightmarish turn. Given co-writer/director Eli Roth’s well-deserved reputation for creating cinematic discomfort, it should come as no surprise what happens next: Things get weird and then dark and then much, much, much darker. But this is no splatter film so Roth keeps the horror nice and psychological as Evan’s life—and house—get ripped apart, piece by beautiful piece.

Knock Knock

And last but certainly not least, the always entertaining Takashi Miike unleashes his latest film, Yakuza Apocalypse, which looks absolutely bonkers – in all the right ways. Centered on a blood-sucking Yakuza boss, this one stars Hayato Ichihara, Lily Franky, Yayan Ruhian, and Den Den.

Synopsis:
Yakuza boss Kamiura is a legend. Rumored to be unkillable, the truth is he is a vampire – a vampire yakuza boss! Among Kamiura’s gang is the loyal Kageyama. However, the young Kageyama is looked down on by the other yakuzas due to the sensitive skin that prevents him from being tattooed.  One day, men arrive from abroad and deliver Kamiura an ultimatum: return to the syndicate he left years ago or die. Kamiura refuses and, during a fierce battle, is torn limb from limb. With his dying breath, Kamiura passes on his powers to Kageyama. As his newfound abilities awaken, Kageyama’s desire to avenge his boss sets him on a violent confrontation with the seemingly unstoppable foreign syndicate.
