*Update* Exclusive: Two Mother’s Day Casting Updates

Two more lovely vixens (or are they would-be victims?) have signed on to Darren Lynn Bousman’s upcoming redux of Charles Kaufman’s 1980 cult classic Mother’s Day, one of which should come as no surprise given her previous working relationship with the director. Yes, Alexa (Repo!) Vega is joining the production, as is Sorority Row‘s Briana Evigan.

We admit having a soft spot for the ladies who continually return to our genre, and both Alexa and Briana (who also appeared in S. Darko) definitely fit that category, as does their previously announced co-star, Deborah Ann Woll from “True Blood”. Which fact helps keep our hopes rising about the remake, wherein we’ll see the villainous family, slightly expanded to include a daughter (Woll), return to the house where they grew up and terrorize the new owners and their guests. All we know so far about the new characters is that Briana’s is named Annette.

We’re awaiting official confirmation of the casting, but our intel feels rock solid. With pre-production in full swing and filming set to begin this fall in Manitoba, you can expect even more updates in the days to come. Of course, the filmmakers are shooting for a spring release timed to coincide with the real Mother’s Day so they will need to keep to a tight schedule.

Alexa Vega and Briana Evigan join cast of Mother's Day

UPDATE
According to THR, Jaime King, Shawn Ashmore, and Matt O’Leary are also in talks to join the production.

The new version, written by Scott Milam, is being remolded as a psychological thriller. King will play the woman of the house, a wife who has lost her child and is isolating herself from her husband.

Ashmore and Evigan will play guests at the house. O’Leary (“CSI”) is one of Mother’s sons, joining the already cast Deborah Ann Woll as members of the family.

“What we’re trying to do is elevate this outside of a genre movie,” Bousman said. “I’ve done three ‘Saw’ films, I’ve done ‘Repo,’ and yes, this is horrific at times, but it’s much darker and deeper because of the focus on the characters.”
