Page Out, Pill In for Lesbian Werewolf Romance Jack & Diane

HBO’s terrific “In Treatment” is becoming quite a springboard for genre actresses. First there was Mia Wasikowska as the new Alice in Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland, and now we have the equally talented Alison Pill joining Olivia Thirlby for Jack & Diane, a picture about two teenage girls who fall in love — and as a result turn into werewolves!
According to /Film Pill’s role was originally slated for Ellen Page, but she has since left the project. The official Jack & Diane website sheds some more light on the film’s plot and includes a statement from director Bradley Rust:
Synopsis:
Jack and Diane, two teenage girls, meet in New York City and spend the night kissing ferociously. Diane’s charming innocence quickly begins to open Jack’s tough-skinned heart. But when Jack discovers that Diane is leaving the country in a week, she tries to push her away. Diane struggles to keep their love alive while hiding a secret that her newly awakened sexual desire is turning her into a werewolf.
Director’s Statement:
My focus in making Jack & Diane is to carefully examine what happens when two young people fall in love for the first time. I want to show this love by looking inside the characters.
When Diane first discovers love, she is desperate to find out if her feelings are being returned. Only she can’t find the words to explain how she feels. Her head gets fuzzy, she gets scared, she panics, and she transforms into a horrifically violent creature. The creature, though grotesque, becomes Diane’s way of saying, “I love you so much I want to eat you and put you inside me forever.”
Certain parts of the film expand into dreamlike and often violent imagery. These moments are a manifestation of Diane’s inner desire for love and acceptance. It is not until Jack also takes on these unusual transformations that she can understand how Diane feels and the two can finally unite.
As for the aforementioned transformations, /Film says, “Also involved in Jack & Diane are some real FX, design, and animation talents. Gabe Bartalos is designing the ’skinless beast’ for the film, basing it upon a ’skinned polar bear head’. Further fantastical flourishes will come with the representation of ‘the interior of Diane’s body: a world of blood, hair, and teeth which is brought to life by her blossoming sexuality’. These sequences will be animated by the peerless, inimitable Brothers Quay.”
