Project Itoh (real name Satoshi Itō) was a top Japanese sci-fi/fantasy author who sadly died of cancer at the age of just 34, long before his time. In his short life, he built up quite an impressive body of work and won a multitude of awards.

At the time of his death, he was working on the zombie novel The Empire of Corpses, but unfortunately he only completed around the first 30 pages. His friend, fellow writer Toh EnJoe, vowed to finish the story so that it can be adapted into a film, along with two more of Itoh’s works, Genocidal Organ and Harmony. The Empire of Corpses will be the first film to be released, debuting next month in Japan.

The story takes place in 19th century London, where resurrected corpses are being used as cheap labor. It centers on a medical student who is trying to discover how to capture the essence of the human soul.

The Empire of Corpses (official website) will be released in Japanese theatres on 2nd October.
