This past Friday, September 18th, marked the commencement of Universal Studios Hollywood’s annual “Halloween Horror Nights,” and we were in attendance to shoot the red carpet roll-out as well as to get a few words from HHN’s Creative Director John Murdy on the same. Read on!

With the previous years’ annual Eyegore Awards (an award show which historically celebrated horror movers and shakers as well as the launch of the event itself) conspicuously and disappointingly absent, genre stars and more nevertheless arrived with enthusiasm to the launch’s carpet, held just outside the Globe Theater.

On hand were Scream series stars David Arquette and Jamie Kennedy, Insidious series directors James Wan and Leigh Whannell (with alumni Lin Shaye, Joe Bishara, Stefanie Scott, and Ty Simpkins), and from the upcoming horror anthology feature Tales from Halloween directors Mike Mendez and Axelle Carolyn as well as actors Barry Bostwick and John Savage. Actresses Brighton Sharbino and Kyla Kennedy of “The Walking Dead” also made an appearance, as did Fast & Furious franchise actor Tyrese Gibson, among others.

Speaking with HHN Creative Director Murdy on the carpet, he stated of his and his team’s creative direction and design of one of the haunt’s more buzzed-about mazes Halloween: Michael Myers Comes Home, “Halloween is one of my favorite films of all time [and] Michael Myers to me is the standard bearer of all slasher movie killers – the scariest. So it was a great honor to get to work with the property and bring it into life as a maze. We brought our own creativity to it as well, and when I sat down with the folks who own Halloween, of course we decided to hit all the iconic scenes from John Carpenter’s original film, but there are a couple of things you might see in there from one of the sequels [too].”

For a behind-the-scenes look at the maze (as well as the attraction Insidious: Return to the Further), you can check out our preview walk-throughs here, and for a full review of this year’s event, check out fellow Dread Central writer Andrew Kasch’s “Halloween Horror Nights” Hollywood 2015 review here.
