At Eliot Brodsky’s Son of Monsterpalooza, part of the Monsterpalooza family of fan events, frightening folks take the tagline “The Art of Monsters” very seriously. The con isn’t just a spectacle, swap meet, or meet and greet — it’s also a place to watch and learn.

At this year’s SoMP, there were some incredible panels (the Tales of Halloween (review) presentation was packed) and tons of monster makeup demos turning everyday mortals into the stuff of nightmares. There were also screenings, parties, and charity events. And cosplayers… lots and lots of cosplayers!

We attended the event on Saturday, which took place as usual at the Marriott Hotel and Convention Center in Burbank, CA, and included Tony Todd, Sid Haig, PJ Soles, James Remar, Cherie Currie, Clu and John Gulager, The Chiodo Brothers, Danielle Harris, James Hong, Lance Henriksen, and many more. Among the no-shows were Dario Argento and Udo Kier.

It was an incredibly hot day, but the melting monster makeup only added to ambiance of fun as Elviras mingled with Pinheads at the bar, and families set up picnics on the patch of grass between the hotel and convention center.

The event remains reasonably priced, with tickets going for $25-30 for day passes and $70 for the whole weekend. Granted, SoMP is a slightly smaller event than Monsterpalooza proper – which will be relocating from Burbank to Pasadena next spring, but you do get a lot of bang for your buck and it’s one of the most fun, laid back horror cons out there.

Stay tuned for more info on Monserpalooza’s move, and in the meantime – check out our exclusive photos from last weekend’s event.
