If you didn’t get a chance to check it out in the past week, M. Night Shyamalan’s The Visit comes highly recommended by most of us here on Dread, so be sure to head out to your local theater and support it. If you’d rather stay home, this week’s VOD offerings are quite impressive.

First up, from the twisted minds of Leigh Whannell (co-creator of Saw and Insidious) and Ian Brennan (co-creator of “Glee”) comes Cooties (review), a horror comedy with unexpected laughs and unapologetic thrills. The film stars Elijah Wood, Rainn Wilson, and Alison Pill.

Synopsis:
When a cafeteria food virus turns elementary school children into killer zombies, a group of misfit teachers must band together to escape the playground carnage. Elijah Wood, Rainn Wilson, and Alison Pill co-star as teachers who fight to survive the mayhem while hilariously bickering in an uncomfortable love triangle on the worst Monday of their lives.

Halloween comes early with Pontypool director Bruce McDonald’s Hellions (review), which plunges a pregnant teen into a nightmarish world of horrors. It comes to us from a screenplay by Pascal Trottier and stars Chloe Rose, Robert Patrick, Rossif Sutherland, Rachel Wilson, Peter DaCunha, and Luke Bilyk.

Synopsis:
A teenager’s Halloween night turns into a terrifying fight to survive when trick-or-treaters from Hell show up at her doorstep. After getting the unwelcome news that she’s pregnant, seventeen-year-old Dora (Chloe Rose) just wants to stay in on Halloween. But then a knock at the door delivers a gaggle of pint-sized demons after one thing: Dora’s baby.

Director Bruce McDonald unleashes a hallucinatory visual and auditory assault that propels Hellions to increasingly disturbing realms of terror.

Nicolas Cage and Sarah Wayne Callies (“The Walking Dead”) enter a Halloween nightmare of their own in Uli Edel’s Pay the Ghost, also available for streaming through various VOD outlets today. We can’t wait to check this one out, as Nic Cage + Halloween is a recipe for awesome.

Synopsis:
One year after his young son disappeared during a Halloween carnival, Mike Cole (Cage) is haunted by eerie images and terrifying messages he can’t explain. Together with his estranged wife (Callies), he will stop at nothing to unravel the mystery and find their son—and, in doing so, he unearths a legend that refuses to remain buried in the past.

And finally, Adam Egypt Mortimer’s Some Kind of Hate (review) rounds out this week’s list of VOD offerings. The film comes recommended by our own Matt Boiselle and stars Ronen Rubinstein, Sierra McCormick, Grace Phipps, Spencer Breslin, Lexi Atkins, Noah Segan, and Michael Polish.

Synopsis:
Some Kind of Hate tells the story of a troubled teen who’s subjected to severe bullying. He accidentally conjures Moira Karp, a teenage girl pushed to commit suicide by bullies years ago. Moira is now a vengeful and unstoppable force on a mission of gruesome retribution. But when she goes too far, Lincoln must prevent her from spiraling out of control in this passionate and vividly violent take on the supernatural slasher.
