Akira Kurosawa’s Last Script Being Turned Into a Game

Back in 2004, a samurai fantasy game called Ni-Oh was announced. People eagerly waited for it to be released… and waited and waited and waited, but nothing happened. While many assumed that the game had become vaporware, at the Tokyo Game Show it was announced that the game is indeed alive and will be released for the PS4 next year. Skipping two generations is better than not being released at all, I guess.

Set in a 16th-century Japan filled with demons and monsters, Ni-Oh follows a samurai who tries to restore peace to the land. He does this by chopping everything to pieces with his katana.

Team Ninja, known for classics like the Ninja Gaiden series, Metroid: Other M, and Hyrule Warriors, are developing.

The game’s plot is actually adapted from a script by Akira Kurosawa, the Oscar-nominated master Japanese filmmaker responsible for movies such as Seven Samurai, Ran, Throne of Blood, and Hidden Fortress, which was a major influence on Star Wars. Sadly, he died in 1998, before he could turn the Ni-Oh into a film; but now, after many years, it’s finally being bought to life.
