SDCC 09: A Nightmare on Elm Street Coverage!

San Diego Comic-Con 2009Just got out of the A Nightmare on Elm Street panel which featured Brad Fuller, Andrew Form, director Samuel Bayer and Freddy Krueger himself, Jackie Earle Haley. We got our first look at the new Freddy at the show via a clip but before we get to that let’s talk about what was shown.

The scene opened with a bunch of cars chasing Krueger into an abandoned building. He locks the doors to keep the angry parents away but before you know it molotovs are crashing through the windows and the room he’s in erupts into flames. His jacket catches fire first and he rips it off revealing the iconic red and green sweater. Then — BOOM — Explosion. From there we end up in the very familar nightmare boiler room with Tina milling about. Familiar claws scrape walls, and Haley does all the trademark Freddy silhouette poses to perfection. Then it’s on to a brief montage which had a few surprisingly almost shot-for-shot scenes. Tina’s levitating off the bed, showing up later standing in a blood stained body-bag, etc. The clip ends with Freddy scraping the wall and uttering the words “Ready or not here I come!”

Gotta say it all looked pretty impressive. including the make-up which looked far more like a realistic burn victim than the Krueger of old. “The make-up is scarier. Realer. More disconcerting.” said Haley about the make-up which took four hours every day to apply. I’d be inclined to agree.

“There are things in this movie that will be very familiar to fans,” says director Samule Bayer. “But this is very much its own film, its own take on things” Guess we’ll all find out soon enough!
