Ellis Developing Horror-Tinged Soap

Bret Easton Ellis working on horror-tinged soap for ShowtimeA reader dropped us a line this weekend with a heads up about a story that appeared in The Hollywood Reporter over a month ago that somehow escaped the attention of all the genre sites out there. Or was it just me? Nah, I’m sure it was everyone…

Said article is about Showtime’s acquisition of a new show being developed by Bret Easton (American Psycho, pictured) Ellis and Dave Kalstein called “The Canyons”. The show is described as a “horror-tinged soap opera”, telling of a group of twentysomethings living in Los Angeles who experience their own unique stresses and hardships. Throughout their trials and tribulations they experience violent situations that manifest themselves as monsters or apparitions that may or may not be real.

Ellis came up with the idea when he spent some very dark times living in a Los Angeles hotel while looking for a home, so don’t expect there to be a lot of smiles and cheer when the series eventually comes to Showtime. How the horror elements are handled will be of great interest to me when it does make its way to the small screen, especially when Ellis said that he wants to try and keep “The Canyons” grounded in reality.

We’ll keep our ears open and hopefully let you know more very soon!
