Hitcher Down, Labyrinth Up

We don’t normally do a box office report from the previous weekend unless something really special took place. In this case I think two special somethings took place that are worth mentioning, however…
First up is The Hitcher (review), Platinum Dunes’ remake of the classic Robert Harmon helmed/Eric Red penned road horror film from 1986, which debuted on the charts at an underwhelming 4th place, taking in just over $8 million its first weekend. Not a terrible take all things considered, but I can’t see it climbing up the charts considering word of mouth is not exactly setting the moviegoing public on fire.
What is putting them all aflame, however, is talk of Guillermo del Toro’s Pan’s Labyrinth, which last weekend added theaters to be playing on a total of 609 screens (more than triple the number it debuted on a few weeks back) and took a hefty climb up the charts from 16th place to 7th, breaking the top ten and proving that people all over the country, not just in the bigger markets, are more interested in a good story no matter what the language.
I couldn’t be happier to see the film doing so well as it deserves every single cent in brings in. The film opens on 200 more screens next weekend so be sure to seek it out if you haven’t already. Could an Oscar be around the corner for the man? We can only hope!
