Paul Verhoeven Is Looking for a Surrogate

Paul Verhoeven may direct The Surrogate for FoxI think I speak for everyone when I say that Paul Verhoeven needs to make more movies. Hell, if you haven’t ‘suffered’ through the absolutely perverse delights of The 4th Man, you’re not really alive! And don’t get me started on RoboCop – absolute perfection. In fact, even with Showgirls and Hollow Man in mind, I’d confidently say the man has never made a terrible film. And now that I’ve shredded my credibility, let’s move on to the news…

The Hollywood Reporter brings word that one of the greatest living directors is eying The Surrogate for 20th Century Fox’s adaptation of the 2004 novel by Kathryn Mackel about a couple desperate to have a child who find themselves in an unbearable position when they find out the surrogate they hired to carry their baby is insane. Never one to shy away from perversity or disturbing material, this could be a perfect fit for the Dutch director.

The rights to the story were originally picked up by Fox Atomic but moved to Fox proper when Atomic was closed down. According to THR, Debbie Liebling, who ran Atomic, is overseeing The Surrogate.

It’s also reported that Verhoeven is developing The Winter Queen, the story of a global terrorist conspiracy in late Nineteenth Century Russia, with Milla Jovovich attached to star. Great to have you back, Paul. Please stay a while!

I love Verhoeven, but it seems like a bad call to name it The Surrogate, with Bruce Willis’ high-profile sci-fi flick Surrogates coming out this Fall.

The title could esily change about 12 times before the movie is released.

As for the Fox thing, Caterpillar, if the person in charge is from Fox Atomic, it could be a good sign.

If this had still been Fox Atomic I would be getting excited right now. Fox proper, however, equals disregard to talent, lowest common denominator filmmaking enforced by studio executives and ceaseless bullying of filmmakers. I’m surprised Verhoeven (or any non-hack director) would be willing to work for these corporate scumbags.
