Behold the Megasnake!

Megasnake! Now here’s a film that I didn’t think I’d ever hear anything about ever again. Nu Image first announced Megasnake at the American Film Market back in 2004. There was absolutely no information about it back then other than the knowledge that it would be a Nu Image production (most likely for the Sci-Fi Channel) and the swanky promo artwork they released. Despite the high probability that the film would end up being cinematic poo, that artwork was so eye-catching and the promise of a modern day mReptilicus about a Godzilla-sized cobra made my B-movie insides quiver with joy. But since then, nothing! Nada! Zippo! I’d already chalked it up to being one of those films that gets announced but never actually made. Then last night I’m looking something up on IMDB, which inevitably leads to me following other links, and look what I find – Megasnake lives!

Megasnake is currently in post-production with a Sci-Fi Channel premiere slated for sometime in 2007. Directing duties go to Tibor Takács who at this point has directed so many Saturday night original movies for the network that it wouldn’t be too far fetched to jokingly call him “Mr. Sci-Fi Channel.” But I won’t, not until they have the pageant and he beats out Dean Cain, Casper Van Dien, and Michael Shanks for the title. Hold up, Michael Shanks is the star of Megasnake! Can two wear the crown?

I haven’t been able to find any plot information – I’m going to go out on a limb and guess it involves a mega-sized snake – outside of Michael Shanks playing a “reluctant ambulance driver” that I stumbled upon with a little Googling. Did you know there were so many “Stargate SG-1” fansites out there? I knew the show had a cult following, but wow! According to one person who met Shanks at a fan convention where the subject of Megasnake was brought up, Canadian-born Shanks reportedly took the role without ever having read the script for the sole purpose of getting him a new US work visa. Since that explanation for why he chose to star in it and that he didn’t much care for the cold Bulgarian weather were pretty much all he had to say about Megasnake, yeah, I probably shouldn’t expect anything anywhere are nifty as the old promo art implies.

I just hope it really is a Godzilla-sized cobra, even if it does turn out to be a poorly CGI’d Godzilla-sized cobra.
