NBC Goes Horror

Just when you thought it was safe to turn on your TV … witness the terror that is … NBC!

Yep, Variety reports that NBC has beaten seemingly everyone to the punch, or will be come March 1st, with the launch of Chiller, the first digital cable network devoted to the genre we all know and love. It will be sent to homes across the country via DirecTV and will also be offered as one of the 100 HD channels from DirecTV set to appear later this year.

Right now the plans for Chiller involve showing multiple NBC Unviersal archived goodies like “Alfred Hitchcock Presents”, Psycho and “Twin Peaks”. They’ll also be showing off my childhood classics like “Freddy’s Nightmares” and “Friday the 13th: The Series”. It’ll be just like the early days of the Sci-Fi Channel all over again!

NBC is the first to offer a digital cable channel, but Monsters HD was the first real channel devoted to horror programming and Comcast’s own Fearnet is the latest to join the game, offering free horror video on demand to Comcast subscribers. How will Chiller stand up to this competition? Only time will tell, but it’s gonna get a lot more interesting…
