Monster X Strikes American DVD

AMC Launches BMC OnlineI’ve been anxiously following the progress of Minoru Kawasaki’s revival of The X From Outer Space mon-star Guilala entitled Monster X Strikes Back: Attack the G8 Summit. Now the geopolitical giant Japanese monster comedy is set to attack American shores on June 30th.

Media Blasters sub-label Tokyo Shock will be releasing this latest oddity from the director of The Calamari Wrestler this summer in both English subbed and English dubbed format. The low budget kaiju comedy sees the G8 Summit of world leaders being interrupted by the return of Guilala, the wacky looking giant monster that original appeared in its own 1968 movie.

I was a lot more enthused about Monster X Strikes Back: Attack the G8 Summit until the universally bad reviews began pouring in describing a film with more emphasis on puerile political jokes than monster action, and what monster action there is consists mostly of stock footage from the original X From Outer Space. Even the final smackdown between Guilala and Beat Takeshi in a multi-armed god-monster costume is said to disappoint. The movie went on to be a colossal box office bomb when it opened last year in Japan.

Still, it’s Guilala and Minoru Kawasaki so I’m still willing to give it a chance. You and I can judge for ourselves when the disc arrives on July 30th. No word if any extras will be included as of yet.

And if Guilala looks familiar to you even though you’re not familiar with either of these films, you might be recognizing him from the commercial for the jobs website The Ladders that featured multiple Guilalas great and small.
