#SDCC15: Garth Ennis Tackles Romance and Violence in A Train Called Love

I don’t read too many comic books these days — Moon Knight still gets a lot of love — but I am pretty well-versed in the work Garth Ennis contributed to the world of Judge Dredd. Considering the amount of violence surrounding that character’s numerous adventures, the idea that Ennis would tackle a romantic comedy as his next endeavor may strike some as more than a little odd.

However, according to the folks at Dynamite Entertainment, who will publish the 10-issue Garth Ennis series A Train Called Love later this year, the writer certainly doesn’t skimp on the violence. In other words, don’t expect Ennis to deliver the sort of squeaky-clean love story that will eventually become a major motion picture directed by the likes of Garry Marshall.

Dynamite provided the following synopsis for the first issue of A Train Called Love for those of us who are out-of-the-loop when it comes to the latest from Ennis.

The first issue of A Train Called Love introduces Valerie, a woman who has been getting dirty phone calls and wants revenge… and in its pursuit, she meets Myles, the man of her dreams. However, Myles has been targeted by Emil and Gustav, two mentally unstable guns-for-hire. Meanwhile, the budding romance gets more complicated as the rest of the cast is introduced: Valerie’s sister Penny, her friend friend Marcy (who’s chasing her musical dreams), a handful of shady characters with a dubious scheme to get rich, and a certain organisation with a lot of Ks in its name. And then there’s Mister Fluffy…

A Train Called Love, which features covers by Russ Braun and artwork by Mark Dos Santos and Andrew Elder, will hit comic book shops this October. If digital is more your thing, you can pick up copies through Comixology, Dynamite Digital, iVerse, and Dark Horse Digital.
