“Better to rest in peace in the warm body of a friend than in the cold ground” – Tagline from the movie Cannibal Holocaust

Ah, 4th of July weekend. A weekend to celebrate commemorating the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, declaring independence from Great Britain.

There will be family and friends getting together to celebrate and watch fireworks, but best of all there will be the all-American barbecue, and who doesn’t love a good barbecue? Is it the smell of the charcoal, the wood chips, or is it all about the smell of the meat cooking away? The smoke from the meat filling the air with its deliciousness and you getting hungrier and hungrier, ready to devour that big slab of meaty goodness!

So, what’s cooking on that barbecue of pleasure? Is it hot dogs, hamburgers, or a nice juicy steak? Or is it something a little more morbid than that?  I mean, really, how many bodies (uh, I mean people) will be at your 4th of July barbecue this year?

The eating of human flesh (cannibalism) goes back a long way. Throughout history, human beings have dined on human flesh. The reasons vary. It could be because it was part of war to gain the enemy’s strength, as a means to terrify opponents, or simply because they have a psychopathic personality and just find eating people absolutely satisfying. Whatever the reason, cannibalism isn’t something new and has been part of the horror movie genre for many many years.

Here are some of our most loved, and most delicious, Cannibalistic Horror Favorites (not in any particular order):

Cannibal Holocaust (1980)

Ravenous (1999)

Parents (1989)

We Are What We Are (2013)

Motel Hell (1980)

The Green Inferno (2013)

“Hannibal” (TV series)
