*UPDATE* New Writer Tapped for Thing Prequel

New Writer Tapped for Thing Prequel (click for larger image)It’s out with the “barely” old and in with the brand spanking new for the upcoming Matthijs van Heijningen, Jr. helmed prequel to the John Carpenter classic The Thing.

Bloody Disgusting got the exclusive word today that Universal Pictures and Strike Entertainment have tapped Eric Heisserer to rewrite the prequel that was originally scripted by Ronald D. Moore. Heisserer also did some clean-up work on Wesley Strick’s screenplay for A Nightmare on Elm Street.

Eric Heisserer confirmed the story on his blog:

“Yes, Matthijs and I are hard at work with the very smart team at Strike on the prequel. We are all so much in love with Carpenter’s film, so protective of it, we’re doing all we can to avoid stepping on its toes. I jumped at this job because I hold the Carpenter adaptation to very high standards, and I knew it would be a challenge to create a comparable companion piece. Sort of a ‘Nobody better screw this up, especially me’ mentality. Lucky for me, the people at Strike and the director have the same standards.

This is a ‘from scratch’ rewrite assignment for the most part, as was my work on A Nightmare on Elm Street. I can’t say any more on that. I have the highest respect for both Ron Moore and Wesley Strick.”

Keep it right here for more as it comes!

I could do without this…I mean, we already know what happened at the Norwegian camp…they all died. not to mention this is being directed by a guy whose only other experience is beer commercials?

    • Gus Bjork

If there was internet in 1980 would people be mad that the screenwriter for The Bad News Bears was tapped to remake The Thing?

  • Caterpillar

The best way to do a remake of the Carpenter film would be to cut the silly STAR WARSy opening scene with the spaceship and just re-release it theatrically.

    Or don’t. I vote don’t.

Just make the damn thing already.
