Laurie Metcalf Joining Bruce Willis for Misery on Broadway

To me she’ll always be Jackie, Roseanne’s little sister, but Laurie Metcalf is about to take on one of the most iconic roles in all of horror: Annie Wilkes from Stephen King’s Misery, which, as we told you back in March, is heading to Broadway with Bruce Willis starring.

Per The Wrap, the Emmy-winning actress is stepping in for Elizabeth Marvel, previously announced for the role of Annie, who had to withdraw from the production due to scheduling conflicts.

Misery begins performances October 22nd at Broadway’s Broadhurst Theatre and officially opens on November 15th in a strictly limited 16-week engagement.

The play was written by two-time Academy Award-winner William Goldman (The Princess Bride, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid), who also wrote the screenplay for the Academy Award-winning film. Will Frears (Omnium Gatherum) is directing.

Misery, based on the Stephen King novel and subsequent film, follows romance novelist Paul Sheldon (Willis) after he is rescued from a car crash by his “number one fan,” Annie Wilkes (Metcalf), and wakes up captive in her secluded home. While Paul is convalescing, Annie reads the manuscript to his newest novel and becomes enraged when she discovers the author has killed off her favorite character, Misery Chastain. Annie forces Paul to write a new “Misery” novel, and he quickly realizes Annie has no intention of letting him go anywhere.

The 1990 film version was directed by Rob Reiner and starred James Caan as Sheldon and Kathy Bates, who won both an Academy Award and a Golden Globe for her performance as Annie. Could a Tony be in Metcalf’s future?
