A feature film adaptation of Steve Alten’s book Meg: A Novel of Deep Terror has been in various stages of development for a full two decades now; yet, we’ve come no closer to it actually taking a bite out of the big screen. Today, however, the project has been put on the fast track.

Tracking Board reports that an adaptation of the New York Times bestseller is moving forward at Warner Bros., and it’s being described as a “priority development” for the studio. This is now the third home that the long-gestating film has found itself in, which has included New Line and Disney.

Meg centers on two men from opposite points of view that are forced to band together in order to neutralize the terror that’s threatening the California coast: Carcharodon Megalodon, an apex predator that reached nearly 80 feet and went extinct around two million years ago.

The Manchurian Candidate and Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life scribe Dean Georgaris scripted the latest draft of the adaptation, taking over for the nearly seven previous writers, including Alten, who penned different versions throughout the years. Sources reveal that Warner is currently in the midst of finding a director for the project.

Veteran producer Colin Wilson, who has long been attached, will produce alongside Belle Avery, while Andrew Fischel and Cate Adams will oversee development for Warner.
