New Triffids Gets Big Casting

New Triffids, new cast!A remake of Day of the Triffids is being prepped for production in the UK, and this morning Variety reports that a huge slew of stars have signed on for the project including Brian Cox, Eddie Izzard, Jason Priestly, Dougray Scott and Vanessa Redgrave.

Based on the best-selling 1951 novel by John Wyndham, Day of the Triffids takes place in the near future, where scientists have developed a new kind of fuel supply, oil-producing plants called Triffids, which backfires on humanity in a big way. After a comet renders most of the planet’s population blind, the plants break free of their prison and start feeding on people. The most well known adaptation of the book was the 1962 Steve Sekely film.

Scott will play hero Bill Masen in the new Triffids, which was penned by “ER”/”Law & Order” scribe Patrick Harbinson. Most significant to UK viewers is that the new mini-series, which wraps filming in April, will be the first production to be broadcast in high definition on the BBC.

I doubt this is going to be any good, since all the BBC recent remakes of old genre shows are just as bad as any American remake.

Expect alot of LOUD dramatic music.

I dig the book and the ol’ film, great sci-fi monster flick, bad enough having an entire population blinede, but mobile carnivorous plants would make for an even worse day.
A new take on this could be interesting, especially if they can raise the bar of a mini-series with HBO/SHOWTIME quality writing, acting and filming.
I’d love to see an adaption of Out Of The Deeps by Wyndham, but the budget would have to be a little hefty to pull it off, a recommended read.
