Bears vs “Monster Wolf” Robots–But It’s Not a Movie!

Residents of Takikawa, Japan have come up with a novel way to scare off wild bears: “Monster Wolf” robots! Okay, they’re really more like animatronic scarecrows, but they’re a genuine creepy factor–certainly enough to inspire a horror movie!

Reuters reports that bear incursions (including two fatal maulings) are at a 5-year high in northern and eastern Japan, prompting a search for creative solutions for spooking the dangerous predators.

“The so-called ‘Monster Wolf’ robot consists of a shaggy body on four legs, a blond mane and fierce, glowing-red eyes. When its motion detectors are activated, it moves its head, flashes lights and emits 60 different sounds ranging from wolfish howling to machinery noises.”

There are currently 70 “Monster Wolves” employed throughout Japan, courtesy of machinery maker Ohta Seiki.
