SXSW 2018: Don’t Leave Home Writer/Director Michael Tully on Creating Atmosphere in Horror

Horror has always been a genre that relies heavily on atmosphere in order to create a viewing experience that is memorable and affects the audience. Movies like The Wicker Man, Suspiria, Repulsion, Alien, The Shining, and the like, all utilize their surroundings to build a foundation upon which the horror of the story can play out. Such is the case with writer/director Michael Tully’s Don’t Leave Home.

Set in beautiful yet haunting Ireland, the film uses its location to the greatest extent possible, adding to the urban legend basis of the story. To tell us more about this, as well as the film itself, we caught up with Tully at this year’s SXSW Convention.

An American artist’s obsession with a disturbing urban legend leads her to an investigation of the story’s origins at the crumbling estate of a reclusive painter in Ireland.

Don’t Leave Home stars Anna Margaret Hollyman, Lalor Roddy, Helena Bereen, David McSavage, and Karrie Cox.
