Horror History: Happy Birthday to the Inglourious Basterd, Michael Fassbender

On this day in horror history, Shame and 12 Years a Slave actor Michael Fassbender was born in Heidelberg, Baden-Württemberg, West Germany in 1977. Fassbender kicked off his film career in style in Zack Snyder’s adaptation of Frank Miller’s 300.

But we know him best as creepy-ass David from director Ridley Scott’s Alien prequels, Prometheus and Alien: Covenant. And Quentin Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds.

His other genre contributions include Blood Creek and The Snowman. Not to mention action flicks like Centurion, Jonah Hex, Haywire, and Assassin’s Creed. And, obviously, X-Men: First Class, Days of Future Past, Apocalypse, and Dark Phoenix.

But don’t make the mistake of forgetting some of his awesome dramas like Hunger, Fish Tank, Jane Eyre, A Dangerous Method, Slow West, Macbeth, and Steve Jobs.

But my top Michael Fassbender recommendation would be the 2008 nihilistic survival horror flick Eden Lake. The brutal, shocking, and gut-wrenching horror movie centers on a young couple (Fassbender and Kelly Reilly) whose romantic weekend break at a remote lakehouse is thrown into Hell by a group of vicious delinquents.

Rated R for strong brutal violence, pervasive language, nudity, and brief drug use, it sports a 79% on Rotten Tomatoes. The Critics Consensus reads: A brutal and effective British hoodie-horror that, despite the clichés, stays on the right side of scary.
