Andy Muschietti’s feature directorial debut, Mama was based on a short film of the same name Muschietti directed previously. Guillermo del Toro saw the short and produced the feature. Mama filmed in Toronto at the same time that del Toro was filming Pacific Rim. This allowed del Toro to come over in the morning and the evenings to check on production.
After the stock market crash in 2008, a man goes crazy, kills his wife and kidnaps his two baby daughters. A car crash on a snowy mountain road kills the dad, and the two little girls are “raised” by an unseen force in the forest. Five years later, the girls are found after having lived ferally in the woods. They move in with their uncle and his girlfriend – and “Mama” comes with them.
