A St. Johns County, Florida man recently phoned the Sherriff’s Department when his dog began bringing home human remains after scavenging in a wooded area near the caller’s home.

The tipster told authorities that his dog had been bringing bones back to the house for several days. So, on February 8, the man followed the gentle creature into the woods and happened upon a human skull and various other skeletal remnants.

Following the tip, local law enforcement taped off the area behind the man’s house and uncovered even more skeletal remains during their search of the area.

The St. Johns County Sheriff’s Department posted this update to their Facebook page following the macabre discovery: “ACTIVE INVESTIGATION: On February 8, a citizen discovered skeletal human remains on private property in the Flagler Estates Subdivision (southern St. Johns County) on Cedar Ford Boulevard. SJSO Major Crimes Unit Detectives and Crime Scene Technicians are processing the scene and have initiated an active investigation to determine the circumstances. Expect SJSO presence in the area.”

To date, there have not been any updates regarding whether or not foul play is suspected. Nor has there been any word regarding the identity of the remains.

The discovery of skeletal remains doesn’t always indicate foul play. In fact, I have previously reported on a couple of different cases where a human skull was donated to a thrift store. However, it seems people who bury human remains usually have something to hide. So, my best guess is that there is some sort of nefarious activity afoot in St. Johns County.
