The Curse of La Llorona arrives in US theaters nationwide this week with a modern reimagining of a classic character from Mexican folklore: The Weeping Woman. The film is directed by Michael Chaves from a screenplay penned by Mikki Daughtry and Tobias Iaconis. And, though it hasn’t been marketed as such, The Curse of La Llorona is at least tangentially connected to The Conjuring Universe launched by James Wan in 2013.

Synopsis:
In 1970s Los Angeles, the legendary ghost La Llorona is stalking the night — and the children. Ignoring the eerie warning of a troubled mother, a social worker, and her own kids are drawn into a frightening supernatural realm. Their only hope of surviving La Llorona’s deadly wrath is a disillusioned priest who practices mysticism to keep evil at bay.

The Curse of La Llorona stars Linda Cardellini, Raymond Cruz, and Patricia Velasquez. It hits US theaters beginning this Thursday, April 18th.
