With filming currently under way in South Africa, images from the set of the Nikolaj Arcel-directed adaptation of Stephen King’s The Dark Tower have been hitting the Net at a steady clip, and now we’ve finally gotten our hands on something official to share. Here are the very first (official) shots of Idris Elba as Roland Deschain and Matthew McConaughey as the evil Man in Black!

The images come courtesy of Entertainment Weekly, who spoke with both actors as part of a must-read, multi-part report on the film.

When we meet Roland, he’s a bit lost,” Elba explained to EW. “He’s been walking around for a long time, so he definitely feels like a man who’s… coiled.”

Well, he is a man, actually,” McConaughey told EW of his villainous character. “They wanted to go very human and grounded with this. Obviously there are mythical proportions of good and evil in Walter. But we didn’t want to go overly fantastic. That would drop the humanity. So Walter, for me, is a man who exposes hypocrisies.

You know, he’s not literally the Devil, but I sure as hell think about him like the Devil,” he added. “I think like the Devil would.”

Based on the King-penned fantasy series, the film follows a wandering knight (Elba) who is the last hope of the fallen land of Mid-World. He is charged with finding the Dark Tower while battling his nemesis, the Man in Black (McConaughey).

Nikolaj Arcei directs with Ron Howard and Brian Grazer producing under their Imagine Entertainment banner along with Stephen King and Erica Huggins.
