New Hulu Dating Thriller Is Too Real For Some Viewers: “It made me physically recoil”

Hulu Cat Person

At the 2023 Sundance Film Festival, I had the pleasure of seeing Susanna Fogel’s Cat Person, an adaptation of Kristen Roupenian’s New Yorker story of the same name.

I was certain it was going to be a hit. I loved it, writing in my review, “Cat Person is deceptively, stylishly terrifying.” I loved its pop culture excess and incredulous shift into horror territory. It was resonant, bold horror, but I was among the few who felt that way. Cat Person premiered as a dud and I had no idea what was going to happen with it. Then, it premiered on Hulu, and now it’s charting in the Top 10.

Per Hulu:

A college student who works at a movie theater goes on an awkward date with an older man who may be a murderer.

Since its arrival on Hulu on February 9, 2024, Cat Person has been steadily climbing the charts, comfortably sitting at number two this past weekend. Strange as it might sound to say, Cat Person always seemed, at least to me, as the kind of movie meant for streaming. It’s both polarizing and conversational, a movie that thrives on dialogue. Love it or hate it, it makes you want to talk, and its availability on Hulu gives audiences the chance to do just that. Mostly, I’m just glad it’s somewhere.

Audiences seem to be just as thrilled to have the chance to talk about it. Since its Hulu premiere, they’ve taken to social media to share their thoughts.

Check out some key reactions below:

Listen, I also physically recoiled several times throughout. For me, it’s an uncomfortable, stellar piece of cinema. I get that it won’t work for everyone, but for now, I’m going to relish Cat Person finding an audience. It feels good to not be alone.

What do you think? Have you caught Cat Person on Hulu? Good or bad? Let me know over on Twitter @Chadiscollins!
