95-Year-Old Bermuda Triangle Ghost Ship Discovered Off The Coast of St. Augustine, Florida

The SS Cotopaxi set off from South Carolina, bound for Havana in 1925. But it vanished almost a century ago near the Bermuda Triangle, leaving no trace of its 32 men crew.

Since it first disappeared, The SS Cotopaxi has become legend with some people claiming a few years back that it had suddenly appeared, empty and intact, floating off the coast of Cuba.

Hell, it even “reappeared” in Steven Spielberg’s Close Encounters of the Third Kind.

But today we learned that explorers have discovered the wreck off the coast of St. Augustine.

The diver, author, and researcher who helped find the wreck, Michael Barnette said: “It was incredibly exciting. I’ve done a countless number of shipwreck dives but this one truly stood out. There were several elements that confirmed the identity such as the dimensions of the ship, its length and the measurement of the boiler. Also, I looked at the general orientation of the machinery. It was all consistent with the information we knew about the Cotopaxi.”

It all started when Barnette and his team discovered a distress call sent by the Cotopaxi back in December 1925. They then mapped the signal’s coordinates and honed in on Bear Wreck, a site discovered 35 years ago which sported a ship that had never been identified.

So I guess The SS Cotopaxi wasn’t missing after all! What do you think? Let us know in the comments below or on Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram
