New Pics Reveal Early GREMLINS Script Killed Gizmo, Judge Reinhold, and More

Totem screenwriter Evan Dickson recently read an early draft of Chris Columbus’s Gremlins screenplay. And he took to Twitter to let us know the draft killed off Gizmo. It also gives the Santa speech to Judge Reinhold before killing him off “Lost Boys-style” style with reindeer antlers. Plus, the bank boss gets it with an American Flag.

Dickson tweets: “Forgot that early GREMLINS drafts had Gizmo dying… They also give the Santa speech to Judge Reinhold then kill him off LOST BOYS style… Damn… [Bank Manager Roland Corben] Killed by American Flag.”

I already knew there was a Gremlins draft where Gizmo turned into Spike. I know they ate the dog and rolled mom’s head down the stairs. But killing Gizmo? Not sure I knew that. In the end, I would have liked to see Reinhold get it “Lost Boys-style” like everyone else, but I’m glad they let Kate keep the Santa speech. I don’t think Reinhold could have ruined my childhood like Phoebe Cates did.
And since we’re here. Gremlins star Zach Galligan thinks Gremlins 3 is inevitable. Especially if HBO Max’s animated series gets “Mandalorian-big.”
He says: “They are doing a ten-part animated series called Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai for HBO Max coming out later this year. You just simply have to look at the nature of the way large entertainment corporations deal with franchises and properties over the years and decades. It’s not difficult to make an educated guess that the cartoon is a way of seeding the younger generation that’s not aware of it. If it is successful, if it gets like Mandalorian-big, then I think Gremlins 3 is inevitable.”
