Mike Flanagan Horror Movie Added Back to Netflix: “The rare horror prequel that’s superior to the original”

Mike Flanagan is a rare breed. The prolific director has a sizable collection of films and series under his belt and somehow hasn’t put out a proper dud to date. Considering how difficult it is to make a movie (or series), let alone a good one, the beloved filmmaker’s track record is truly impressive.
Speaking of Flanagan’s filmography, we have just learned that an early career effort for the director has landed on Netflix. I’m talking about Ouija: Origin of Evil. This 2016 feature has the rare distinction of being better than the original picture by which it is preceded.
Completists will be pleased to know that the streamer also has Ouija available; the 2014 film to which Origin of Evil serves as a sequel. But consider yourself warned, the first installment in the Ouija series was universally panned by critics and fans. In fact, the flick sits at a critical score of just 6% ‘fresh’ on Rotten Tomatoes. Ouch.
The cast of Origin of Evil features several familiar faces, including a couple of frequent Flanagan collaborators. Elizabeth Reaser, Lulu Wilson, Annalise Basso, Henry Thomas, and Parker Mack all appear in starring roles.

The setup goes like this: In 1967 Los Angeles, widowed mother Alice Zander (Reaser) unwittingly invites authentic evil into her home by adding a new stunt to bolster her séance scam business. When the merciless spirit overtakes her youngest daughter Doris (Wilson), the small family must confront unthinkable fears to save her and send her possessor back to the other side.
