Guillermo del Toro Calls This Crime Thriller on HBO Max “Perfect”

Fargo and The Big Lebowski may be the most recognizable features from beloved directors Joel and Ethan Coen. But the fraternal filmmaking duo has been behind a number of noteworthy releases, most of which are well worth seeking out. Among their impressive filmography is Blood Simple, a feature for which auteur director Guillermo del Toro has nothing but love.
When del Toro was promoting the Academy Award-winning film The Shape of Water, he spoke with the fine folks at Criterion about some of his favorite titles the boutique distributor has released over the years. During that exchange, del Toro had the following to say of Blood Simple:
“Blood Simple contains most, if not all, of the preoccupations the Coens will articulate throughout their career . . . It’s a perfect first movie.”
