TikTok Claims This Forgotten Mia Goth Thriller Has an Unmissable Twist Ending

Mia Goth film twist ending - tiktok loves it

J.A. Bayona’s The Orphanage is one of the century’s best ghost stories. While Bayona deserves heaps of credit for his tender update of classic gothic flair, there’s no discounting Sergio G. Sánchez’s screenplay, a tragic puzzle box that, quite simply, gets what a ghost story should be.

While Bayona and Sánchez would collaborate once more on the heartbreaking survival thriller The Impossible, Bayona would shift into more mainstream offerings. At the same time, Sánchez, in his directorial debut, returned to a realm he knew well. I’m talking, of course, about 2017’s Marrowbone. TikTok recently discovered the movie, and now they’re saying it has one of the best twist endings of all time.

Per Hulu: A young man and his younger siblings who have concealed the death of their mother to remain together are plagued by a sinister presence in their home.

TikTok users are especially thrilled with the cast and I can’t really blame them. It’s hard to see how Marrowbone never got a domestic theatrical release with the kind of talent it has attached to it. There’s George MacKay, Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Heaton, and Mia Goth. Seriously? That’s a gothic horror fan’s dream of spooky, sad visages. And it’s perfect because Marrowbone is spooky and sad.

The Orphanage is one of my favorite horror movies ever, so I saw Marrowbone as soon as I could. I liked it, though I will diverge from TikTok to concede the twist really isn’t that great. If you’ve seen a horror movie—any horror movie—you’ll know the twist right away. Still, the cast is sensational, and Sánchez texturizes the family tragedy beyond the ultimate twist. It’s a part of it, but it isn’t all of it.

In the years since its release, it’s flown under the radar. It’s one of the few contemporary examples of modern gothic we have, so for fans interested in the subgenre, I’d heartily recommend checking it out.

What do you think? Do you agree with TikTok users that Marrowbone is a criminally underrated ghost story with a fantastic twist? Let me know over on Twitter @Chadiscollins, and for those interested, Marrowbone is currently streaming on Hulu.
