Exclusive: Frank Whaley Talks About His Role in Cold Moon

We here at Dread Central were luck enough to grab a few minutes with Frank Whaley, who stars in Cold Moon, set to release in limited theaters and on VOD services this coming October 6th. He gave us the lowdown on his role, as well as what he’s got coming up in the future, so settle in and read on!
DC: Can you tell us a bit about the film’s premise and your character, Sheriff Hale?
FW: It involves the murder in a small Southern town of this young girl, and I play the sheriff of the town that’s investigating this bizarre, awful crime.
DC: Some people who’ve already laid eyes on this film have described your character as a man who might have seen too much over the course of his career – even maybe being an individual that’s haunted – do you see him that way?
FW: I would say so – I would say that he’s kind of overwhelmed by it [the murder] and not really prepared for this kind of investigation – maybe he is a little bit haunted and out of his depth, and I think it all catches up at some point with him.
DC: Over the course of your career, you’ve played quite a few roles alternating between television and film – do you find yourself putting in differing modes of preparation for each of those roles?
FW: I wouldn’t say so – usually the kinds of films I’ve been doing are much more low-budget independent films, so there’s a little bit less time to finish a role overall – the preparation process is sort of sped up, simply due to the time. A lot of the lower-budgeted films that I’ve been doing, you have one day to film 8 to 10 pages, so you have to have your homework done, but with television, you’re allotted a bit more time, so there’s not that much pressure which could affect the preparation and overall process.
DC: Was there a certain aspect of this film that hooked you into the role?
FW: I thought that there was a certain unique quality to the writing and the book, which was fascinating in the way that it was written. I also really love the character and the idea of playing this sheriff of a small town who’s obviously in over his head and is having difficulty piecing the case together – it was pretty challenging.
DC: You also have some writing and directorial credits on your resume – is it something that you could see yourself moving more towards in the future and away from acting?
FW: That’s what I’ve been trying to do, yeah – I started out as a writer in my career, so I’m hoping that one of these days I can do that full time, as well as be a bit more choosy with the roles when they come along – something like Cold Moon – I’d definitely jump into something like that.
DC: After the release of Cold Moon, what else can we expect to see you in?
FW: I’m doing some more episodes of “Marvel’s Luke Cage” on Netflix, and I’m appearing in the upcoming season of “Sneaky Pete” on Amazon, as well as directing my next film called Winning the City, which will go into production in a couple of months.
