A lot of the time, it gets its sci-fi elements over-emphasized. The version I have of it is published under Gollancz' "Science Fiction Masterworks" series, and two of the three movie adaptations refer to the vampires as "mutants" instead.

Yeah, well Hollywierd is known for thinking they can improve classics. I think the first two (Omega Man and Last Man on Earth) changed the vampires because, at the time, the cinema-going audience wouldn't have "gotten" a world full of vampires. The thing that bugged me about Will Smith's version was that they left the neighbor out. They changed the ending around when the ending and plot of the book was perfectly good. I think I'd have liked it better if it had been released with a different name and I weren't comparing it to the source material, but then again, Richard Matheson can do no wrong in my eyes.

I wasn't referring to that as much as to the marketing and reputation of the novel.
